What is Posca Hydrate?

Posca Hydrate is the OG sports drink, reborn. Two thousand years ago Roman gladiators drank Posca to replace sweat and stay sharp. We’ve taken that recipe, stripped out the nasties, and rebuilt it with modern science.

Who created Posca Hydrate?

Our co-founder Merrick Watts stumbled on the story of Posca in 2021 while nerding out on the history of wine. As a fitness nut (and someone who survived SAS Australia), he figured: if it kept armies marching 2,000 years ago, maybe it can keep us charging through modern life.

So he started mixing batches on his kitchen bench, trialling it mid-workouts, and obsessing over taste and function. Three years later – refined with the same rigour he brings to wine – Posca Hydrate was born.

What was the original Posca recipe?

The Romans drank a mix of water, vinegar, salt and herbs. Safe, refreshing, electrolyte-rich. Gladiators, peasants, emperors – everyone had their sip. It was hydration for the people.

How does Posca Hydrate blend ancient wisdom with modern science?

Is it safe for kids or pregnant women?

By law, as a Formulated Supplementary Sports Drink, we must display a warning: not suitable for under 15s or pregnant women. The reason? We skipped the sugar and added bubbles. It’s regulation red tape, not risk.

If Posca Hydrate added one and a half teaspoons of sugar per can (6.6g to be precise) we would be classified as an "Electrolyte Drink".
Because Electrolyte drinks must contain carbohydrates. No warnings needed.

If Posca Hydrate didn't have its delightfully refreshing bubbles, it would be a "Formulated Beverage", which is any ready to drink, water based beverage that contains vitamins and minerals. Seriously. Same ingredients, but without the bubbles.

Can Posca help with hangovers?
